IMPORTANT: new ministerial resolutions 2019

Machu Picchu can no longer be visited either in the morning (Group 1 from 6am to 12pm) or in the afternoon (Group 2 from 12pm to 5.30pm). In order to relieve the site, the Government has decided to divide the days into 3 groups of 3 tours each. We will simplify by saying that from January 1, 2019 the visit to Machu Picchu will be according to 9 different entry schedules that must be chosen at the time of booking. These entry schedules are from 6am to 3pm per 1 hour period, which means that the visitor will have to choose in which schedule to entry to Machu Picchu, i.e. pass the entrance gate. For example, the 7am schedule to enter between 7am and 8am, or the 12am schedule to enter between 12pm and 1pm. The visit will be for 4 hours. We are aware of the complications and confusion that this will create, but like you, we are subject to ministerial decisions.

Again, to simplify, our agency has chosen to use its own name for each of the schedules and not those of the Ministry of Culture. We have therefore chosen to call each of these entry schedules: Machu H6 (6am entry schedule), Machu H7, Machu H8, ..., Machu H14 (2pm entry schedule).

Can a person purchase 2 tickets for Machu Pichua in one day? A morning one to climb Hanya Pichua and an afternoon one to be guided through Machu Picchu?

Hello Janet,

In theory, you can and must purchase 2 tickets in order to visit Machu Picchu the whole day, whatever if you want to visit another site like Wayna Picchu or Machu Mountain. So, in theory you need to buy a ticket for Machu Picchu G1 (morning) and Machu Picchu G2 (afternoon).

But it's a theory. In fact, the agents in the Citadel allow people to stay few hours more that the allowed. So your ticket for the morning allows you to stay in Machu Picchu few hours more than the limit of 12am. But if you want to stay until 4pm or 5pm, the most secure is to buy 2 tickets for G1+G2.

This is for both 2018 and 2019 tickets. But remember that tickets, services, spaces and hours have changed for 2019. 2018 has "only" 7 types of tickets, 2019 has 15!

We just updated half-hour ago the page: https://ticket-machupicchu.com/ticket/limitations.php in order to show all these tickets.

Best regards.

Thank you for your response. We have not been able to reserve and purchase tickets on your website for 30 April 2019. We have reserved tickets through the https://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/ but can't pay for them. Can you please help us/explain how to reserve and purchase 3 tickets for Machu Picchu and MP Montana for 30 April 2019? Ever so grateful for your help.

Hello again Janet,

Right now, it's impossible to pay in the official website. Yesterday they changed their website and since then there is a lot of problems, including the payment. So, you CAN'T buy any ticket from the official website now.

Our website is ok and there is no reason or error to stops for purchase for April. We already received a lot of purchases for April. So please let us know if you have any error or why exactly you can't purchase from our website. If you have any problem during the purchase, please contact us through our chat (the green dialog icon at the bottom-right) in order to assist you in real-time.

Regards.

Hi again Janet,

I'm pretty sure that the problem is that you chose 2018 in the 1st page of our form.

Please be sure to select 2019 in the Step 1 https://www.ticket-machupicchu.com/purchase/form1.php. The selected year appears in WHITE.

Please try and let us know if it's ok.

Hi,

We would like to cover in 1 day MP+Huayna Picchu and Mountain Machu Picchu. For example entering the citadel after 6.00 and then MP mountain from 7 to 10.30 and then MP mountain from 11.00 to 13.00. After that we would like to have 3 hours (that is to say intil 4 pm) to look around.

Could you, please, tell me how many tickets should I purchase then 2 *MP+Huyana and MP+MP mountain) or 3 -..+ afternoon shift of MP?

If we buy the first two, we have to finish the whole tour up to 2 pm. Could we stay longer though without need to buy 3d afternoon ticket? You mention that usually the guards in the citadel leave you more time to walk around. But how is controlled your stay there? Should I pay a fine for postponed stay or I will be chased out? For which part it is necessary to have obligatory a guide and how long? Will we have some more free time after the guide to walk around by ourselves? Best regards, Plamena

Hello,

We know that with the new regulation and 15 types of tickets, it's not very easy to understand what kind of ticket visitors need.

In theory you can buy a Machu H6 + Wayna H7 ticket, enter Machu Picchu at 6am, walk to the Wayna Picchu entrance, arrive 20 minutes later, start to climb Wayna at 7am and be back for Machu Mountain H9 that allows you to enter until 10am. Well, this is in theory. In fact, you will perhaps need to wait before entering Wayna Picchu. Then, once you will be at the top one hour later, you will want to stay 20 minutes to take pictures and see the view. Then it would be hard to be on time to visit the Mountain.

So if in theory you can, we don't recommend it. But if you really want that, buy 1 ticket for MP H6+Wayna H7; and 1 ticket for MP H8 and Mountain H9.

We never saw somebody visiting both sites the same day and, for your information, even the official website doesn't (technically) allow it but, I repeat, you can buy these 2 tickets.

Visitors that want to see both sites prefer to stay an extra day in Aguas Calientes.

Whatever the ticket, in theory you must stay up to 4 hours in total, that is in fact not actually applicable for many reasons. First because it is hard for official agents to check everybody every time to verify at what time visitors entered and ask them to leave the Citadel if they spent more than 240 minutes! But also because a simple arithmetic says that if you visit Mountain you need to enter by the Main Gate, walk 20 minutes, climb 2 hours, stay at the top 20 minutes, go down 2 hours, and take the exit gate in 10 minutes. Everything in 4 hours! It sounds crazy!

Guides are mandatory, you are right. They are outside the Main Entrance and you can hire one. Sometimes you can negotiate the price, sometimes not. The tour takes 1 to 4 hours but the guide will be with you around 90 minutes, only in the Citadel. They don't follow you for the Mountain or Wayna visit and you can stay as long as your ticket allows you to stay and visit any place you want.

Thank you for your questions because they are very common and we hope other travelers will find some answers in this post.

Best regards.

Hi,

Thank you so much for your kind answer :) I appreciate it very much! It is so helpful information!

One more question only - if we need to extend our stay after 2 pm in Machu Picchu could we buy tickets directly from the entrance of the citadel or we should have them bought long ahead?

Best regards,

Plamena

Hi again,

We are glad we can help.

Tickets are not sold on site at the entrance of the citadel, you must purchase them before going to Machu Picchu and print them in advance.

Have a nice day.

Hi again and thank you so much for your help!

Would you please just clarify when it is supposed for us to hire a guide and have a guided tour of the citadel if we choose MP 6 and MPM 7-8? And what will be the procedure? Negotiate a guide before entering and after coming back from the peak the tour starts? And if so how we arrange the meeting with the guide? And what about the procedure of hiring guide if we choose MPM 8-9 and HP 10.30-11.30?

Could we buy return ticket only for the bus from the entrance of the citadel or we should have them in advance?

Thanks a lot once again!

Hi,

We are glad we can help.

First of all, if you have the mountains, there is no guide for visiting them and so there is no need to hire a guide for MP. This is exactly because the questions you asked. It is not manageable. Guides are independent certified guides and each person negotiates rates and conditions when hiring them at the entrance gate. We cannot help you with further details on their work.

As per bus tickets, you just purchase a round trip when arriving in Aguas Calientes and take the bus from the citadel when you prefer.

Kind regards.

Thank you for the information!

I am sorry for disturbing you for having so many questions.

As far as I understand we should be in Aguas Calientes the day before if we would like to do MP+MP mountain since 6.00.

But, if we choose the 2d shift (since 8.00 and entrance to the mountain between 9.00-10.00, should we stay for sure in Aguas Calientes the day before or we could come with the earliest train from Ollantaytambo arrivinf in AC at 6.35? How long at maximum should we wait for the bus to leave?

Could we leave our luggage in a luggage store at the train station in AC or somewhere else?

Best regards,

Plamena

Hi

We want to visit Machu Picchu in the afternoon and I'm trying to figure out if a 1pm ticket allows us to enter any time after 1pm, or only between 1pm and 2pm. We will be doing this midweek (Thursday) in late May.

Also, does anyone have advice on how long to expect to wait for the bus to take us up Machu Picchu? We will need to schedule a taxi from cusco and a train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu to cater for this wait time. We can buy the Machu Picchu bus ticket in Cusco if that helps.

We are staying in Aguas Calientes after the MP visit then heading back to Ollantaytambo for more activities next day before getting taxi back to cusco.

Any and all advice appreciated

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

You can enter after the time indicated on your tickets until 3 pm, no problem with that.

Buses are not full to go up that time of day. It takes about 30 minutes to get the bus full and leave, and 30 minutes to go up to the entrance of Machu Picchu. The Machu Picchu bus tickets can be easily purchased directly at the bus station upon arrival. It is the best choice.

You can schedule a taxi from Cusco the night before at your hotel, it is very easy. Allow at least 2 hours before the time on your train ticket in Ollantaytambo.

The best advice would be not to organize tight schedules, things don't work like that in Peru. Timetables are not strictly respected.

Kind regards.
